Carter Center Journalism Fellow Christine Herman wins PRNDI Award
WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 15, 2019) — Christine Herman, a health reporter for Illinois Public Media and Side Effects Media, received a Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRNDI) award for outstanding news feature.
Herman, a 2018-2019 Rosalynn Carter Fellow for Mental Health Reporting, won second place for her story for Illinois Public Media, “Out of Options, Parents Trade Custody for Treatment.”
Herman found that as families across the U.S. face barriers to mental health treatment, such as a shortage of psychiatric beds and insurance coverage denials, some parents have discovered a last resort workaround: trading custody in a desperate attempt to get their child treatment.
